Zefiro: how to turn your smartphone into a saxophone?

► Briefly

  • Zefiro is a music accessory
  • It allows the user to reproduce the sounds of various instruments
  • The project can be supported via Kickstarter

What if your smartphone turned into a recorder? Please note that we are not presenting you with a gadget application, but rather with a solid solution, equally designed for beginning musicians and MAO (Computer Assisted Music) enthusiasts. Here is Zefiro, a truly stunning innovation that reproduces the sounds of many musical instruments through simple USB-C support and specialized software.

USB key for playing wind instruments

Zefiro’s invention started with a simple idea: what if you could carry your favorite musical instrument in your pocket? Of course, the idea may seem absurd. However, it is a successful bet for the team behind the project! Because through a simple plastic block equipped with a USB-C connector and a notch designed to be used as a wind instrument reed, the user can easily reproduce any piece on a smartphone and tablet.

Connect, play, create

But how does Zefiro work? It’s actually very simple: the block actually serves as a mouthpiece, and when connected to the device, it will reproduce the sounds of the instrument of your choice. To do this, it relies on a dedicated app for Android and iOS, as well as a large one sound bankwhich allows the user to imitate a real wind or string instrument using a smartphone or tablet.

But this plug & play goes beyond just a music playback tool. With MIDI input, an accelerometer, and an interface as smooth as it is customizable, Zefiro is aimed at both budding musicians and professionals who want to record and share their work. It is thus possible to simply play, but also to integrate the instrument into the MAO composition as easily as by integrating a MIDI keyboard.

Zefiro, a project to support

If you would like to get your own Zefiro module, we have good news for you: the mouthpiece can be ordered via Kickstarter project page ! Available through various support packages starting at €29, the accessory will ship from February 2025. While the team behind the project was aiming for a €5,000 goal, the page has already collected €67,875 in contributions. A big success therefore for the most impressive innovation.
