According to Reuters, Sony intends to acquire the parent company of the FromSoftware studio, which is responsible for the Dark Souls trilogy and Elden Ring. If it becomes official, it would be a big blow for the Japanese company.
What if Sony bought FromSoftware? That’s what they report Reuters in an article published on November 19, 2024. More specifically, the multinational could acquire Kadokawa, the parent company of the studio behind the Dark Souls trilogy and a masterpiece Elden Ring. This conglomerate also has manga and book publishing activities.
Sony and Kadowaka did not confirm the indiscretion to Reuters, which relied on two sources to support its comments. The two sides are currently in talks and a point of rapprochement could be found in the coming weeks. Kadowaka’s market cap is around $2.7 billion, an amount that could be less than what Sony paid for Bungie (slightly less than $4 billion).
Sony would be dealing a major blow by offering FromSoftware
Sony would obviously land a huge blow if it managed to add FromSoftware to its galaxy of studios capable of offering significant exclusives to its PlayStation ecosystem. For example, we could imagine a sequenceElden Ring which will initially be available only on the PlayStation console ( PlayStation 6 ?) — before it appears on the PC.
So we remind you that the first Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies, allowing FromSoftware to expand its audience and introduce its soulslike formula to as many people as possible. For Sony, this is a know-how that should not be neglected, knowing that the two companies have already agreed on the offer Bloody only on PS4. A potential acquisition should also revive the rumours for remastering or even remake.
In any case, the level of quality of the studio’s games could be even higher, with a total optimization of the capabilities of PlayStation 5 then PlayStation 6 (as is the case with the remake Soul of Demons For example). Of course, reaching 30 million sales without being available on other platforms will be much less obvious.
We’ll always remember that Sony wasn’t always happy with the studios it bought. Bungie has had its ups and downs and the future of the Destiny saga is not the brightestwhile flop Concordwhich swallowed millions of dollars ended in closing of Firewalk Studios. Let’s hope for a better fate from FromSoftware if they join PlayStation.
