The nominations for The Game Awards 2024 have been announced. Like every year, there are favorites, but the least divisive choice would be to crown the formidable Astrobot.
We now know the list of games nominated for GOTY at The Game Awards 2024 – which will be broadcast on December 12. There are six of them who can win the title of game of the year, then they succeeded Baldur’s Gate 3.
As always, favorites stand out. This year there are two: Astrobot AND Final Fantasy VII Rebornwhich have seven nominations each. But be careful Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtreewhich could be the first sacred DLC, or do Metaphor: ReFantazio. Note also the quotation from Balatro.
Two big favorites for the 2024 Games title
Big No. 1 Favorite: Astro Bot (PS5)
Astrobotit’s luck in the target state. Astrobotit’s video games at their most generous. Astrobotit is a tribute to a legacy that has marked several generations. There are a thousand and one reasons to crown this PS5 exclusive, which benefits from incredible care and plenty of ideas to impress. It’s simple: if Astrobot he wore blue overalls and a red cap, there would be absolutely no debate about that.
His rating on Numerama : 9 out of 10.
Its Metacritic score : 94 out of 100.
His number of nominations : 7.
His chances of winning : very high.
Highlighting
- Ideas full of ideas
- Attention to detail
- Cast of men
Weak points
- A reminder that DualSense is underutilized
- No multi mode
- 100% is quickly compounded for regulars
Big Favorite Number 2: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5)
Final Fantasy VII Reborn has some serious arguments in the GOTY race, starting with the rush of nostalgia that carries this reimagining of the cult RPG. There are obvious flaws (overabundance of minigames, filling open areas, etc.), but this second chapter of an ambitious remake reminds us how much Final Fantasy VII is capital work. The issues and characters haven’t gotten old. Unlike the fans, who are already waiting for the conclusion with great impatience.
His rating on Numerama : 9 out of 10.
Its Metacritic score : 92 out of 100.
His number of nominations : 7.
His chances of winning : very high.
Highlighting
- The power of nostalgia
- The story, the characters, the main points… Nothing has gotten old
- Incredibly deep combat system
Weak points
- These really annoying minigames
- An escalation phase of mind-boggling ridiculousness
- Filling open areas
Big DLC that can’t win: Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC)
We loved coming back Elden Ring Thanks Shadow of Erdtreean incredible expansion to an incredible game. But the DLC does not deserve the title for obvious reasons: it is only an expansion of the game already named in 2022 (and at that time without possible disputes). Put GOTY in Shadow of Erdtree would seriously have a déjà vu flavor if I knew The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomtrue sequel, it didn’t win last year. It would also be insulting to previous awesome expansions that weren’t so lucky (example: Blood and wine from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt).
His rating on Numerama : 10 out of 10.
Its Metacritic score : 94 out of 100.
His number of nominations : 4.
His chances of winning : high (unfortunately).
Highlighting
- Incredible art direction
- Level architecture
- Dense, rich content full of mystery
Weak points
- Conditions of access
- Unbalanced boss cast
- Still too mysterious
Unmissable Challenger: Metaphor: ReFantazio (PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, PC)
Pay attention to it Metaphor: ReFantaziowhich accumulates qualities and is unanimous among Japanese RPG lovers. Completing the Persona formula, Metaphor: ReFantazio combines extremely refined gameplay, dazzling art direction and well-crafted themes. We really shouldn’t be surprised if he beats the favorites for the GOTY post. And it would be deserved.
His rating on Numerama : not tried.
Its Metacritic score : 94 out of 100.
His number of nominations : 6.
His chances of winning : high.
Big Chance: Black Myth Wukong (PS5, PC)
Huge commercial success thanks to unwavering support from China, The Black Myth of Wukong is repeated reading Journey to the Westmonument of Asian literature. His combat science and his art direction speak for themselves, but Game Science, a representative of the Asian new wave to be taken seriously, has undoubtedly done too much. The fact remains that The Black Myth of Wukong he has a whole country behind him and a handful of admirers.
His rating on Numerama : 6 out of 10.
Its Metacritic score : 81 out of 100.
His number of nominations : 4.
His chances of winning : medium.
Highlighting
- Art direction to die for
- Gameplay with a twist
- Generous content
Weak points
- Questionable balance
- PS5 optimization to review
- Architecture of hellish environments
Surprise Guest: Balatro (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android)
There is always a little surprise among the suitors. This year, yes Balatrowhich appropriates the rules of poker to make it a terribly addictive card game. His presence here is not the result of chance because Balatro it has captivated thousands and thousands of players since its launch. This nomination alone is quite a reward for the developers of LocalThunk. But we rather imagine it triumphing in the Best Indie Game category.
His rating on Numerama : not rated.
Its Metacritic score : 90 out of 100.
His number of nominations : 5.
His chances of winning : weak.
