The iPhone SE 4 is expected to launch in March 2025 with a highly anticipated component: the first 5G modem designed by Apple, which no longer wants to source from Qualcomm.
According to a cabinet report Barclayswhose analysts were sent to Asia to Apple’s suppliers and production lines, the iPhone SE 4 will serve as a guinea pig by building the very first 5G modem designed by Apple. The Cupertino company has been talking about developing its own modem for years;
Let’s recall that between 2017 and 2019, Apple and Qualcomm waged a legal war, the former mainly accusing the latter of abusing its dominant position in the chip segment. After their relationship deteriorated significantly, Apple wanted to break its dependence on Qualcomm by creating its own modems and buying Intel’s modem division to do so. The process has been long and arduous, but the Apple brand seems finally ready to equip its iPhones with a home modem.
Apple’s first 5G modem for the iPhone SE 4
Last year, Apple signed a contract extension with Qualcomm to ensure the supply of modems until 2026. The iPhone 17 series should also continue to use the Qualcomm modem, possibly for the last time. The new expected model, thinner and lighter, which we call it for now iPhone 17 Air or the iPhone 17 Slim could be equipped with Apple’s new 5G modem. The company is even already working on 6G modem design for the next generation of mobile networks.
