Since the iOS 18 update, iPhones support the RCS protocol, a technology intended to replace SMS that allows access to advanced messaging features comparable to those found in third-party apps such as WhatsApp. Since Android also supports RCS, this technology allows you to exchange text messages between iPhone and Android devices without using SMS or third-party messaging apps.
Samsung warns of the problem
Although Apple supports RCS, its implementation of the technology differs from Android devices. As a result, there are RCS features that are available on Android devices but not on iPhone. And among those features that are unavailable on the iPhone, unfortunately, is end-to-end encryption.
When exchanging RCS text messages, discussions are end-to-end encrypted, just like on WhatsApp. This encryption, if available, is symbolized by a small padlock located below the Send button in the Google Messages app. But this encryption is not available for chats between iPhone and Android devices, as recently reminded by Samsung.
Recently, the Korean giant released a press release that showcases the benefits of RCS already available on its products. And in a footnote, Samsung writes: “Encryption is only available for Android-to-Android communication.”
A situation that may develop
The good news is that Apple may later add end-to-end encryption to its implementation of RCS technology. As a reminder, RCS is a protocol of the GSMA, the organization representing telecommunications players. And the official protocol adopted by Apple does not yet include end-to-end encryption. On Android, this is a feature developed by Google to improve its messaging. But in July, our colleagues at Android Authority discovered clues suggesting that end-to-end encryption could eventually become part of the official protocol.
In any case, the GSMA is already working to improve its protocol to support better interoperability between the various devices and applications that use RCS. In July, for example, it introduced a new version of the technology that brings new functionalities. “Compared to previous versions, they provide support for more engaging messaging, such as replying to messages and customizing the message they previously sent.” said the association in a press release.
RCS on iPhone remains a positive development
In any case, while RCS on iPhones do not have the same level of security as among Android devices, Apple’s adoption of the standard is already good news for the rest of the industry. “Now that the latest version of iOS supports RCS, the benefits are available outside of the Android ecosystem when sending messages across platforms.
