New D&D game, but is it Baldur’s Gate 4?
THE CEO of Hasbro, Chris Cocksrecently confirmed Bloomberg the existence of a new D&D video game project. This announcement comes shortly after Larian Studiosthe studio behind Baldur’s Gate 3 has expressed its desire to distance itself from the franchise and explore new horizons.
At least as far as we know four D&D games are in development, the identity of this fifth project remains a mystery. Is it Baldur’s Gate 4, a new game in space? Forgotten Realmsor a whole new adventure? For now, Hasbro is keeping quiet and letting fans speculate.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Colossal Legacy
It’s hard not to think of Baldur’s Gate 4 in the face of this announcement. Baldur’s Gate 3 raised the bar and redefined the standards of Western RPGs. Larian Studios has succeeded in creating a gigantic, rich and complex game, true to the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons while still being accessible to a wide audience.
The critical and commercial success of Baldur’s Gate 3 revived the series and prompted a unprecedented madness for the D&D video games. Hasbro would therefore be wise to take advantage of this momentum and offer a sequel worthy of the name.
Which studio will take up the torch?
If Baldur’s Gate 4 is indeed in development, there is an acute question as to which studio will develop it. Larian Studios declined the offer, and Hasbro will have to find a replacement capable of taking on the challenge.
Developing a game the size of Baldur’s Gate 3 requires considerable expertiseboth technically and creatively. The chosen studio must not only master the complex mechanics of D&D, but also be able to create a rich and immersive universe populated by memorable characters.
