Google News has benefited from a number of improvements this year from computer-aided responses to RCS dual-SIM support. The latest is a new gesture that lets you respond to messages with hearts by double-tapping them.

More reactions to messages

Reactions in Google Messages are a notable feature of the app, but it doesn’t support gestures to use a message reaction. As found out 9to5GoogleGoogle added a “double-tap” gesture to the Android app to respond with a “heart” emoji.

This gesture works similar to the “double tap to heart” feature that users are used to in Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

The feature is added via server, so some users may get it later. More importantly, it’s only available if you enable RCS and the recipient you’re chatting with has also enabled the Rich Messaging standard.

Once you receive the feature, you’ll see a visual prompt labeled “Double Tap Heart” below the recent message and next to the timestamp. However, this should also work with previous messages. Here’s a quick overview of how to use this feature.

How to enable RCS in Google News?

You must first enable RCS to use the double-tap heart gesture and other RCS features. Follow the steps below.

  1. Run the application News on your smartphone
  2. Click on your profile to open the menu
  3. Tap on Message settingsthen move on RCS cats
  4. Enable the option Enable RCS chats
  5. For Single SIM RCS, select the SIM card or mobile phone number you want to configure

How to use the Double Tap to Heart gesture in Google Messages?

Once you’ve finished setting up RCS in the Messages app, you can now take advantage of the smart features included in RCS, such as typing indicators and the new heart-tapping gesture. Note that RCS is also enabled for the contact you are messaging. Here’s how to use it.

  1. In the RCS chat, double-tap the message to add a red heart reaction
  2. A playful heart animation will appear as well as a red heart indicating a message
  3. Double-tap the message again to remove the heart reaction

For now, the feature is limited to heart reaction and there is no way to customize which reaction to use. But it’s something Google should probably add in the future.
