In its early days in the UK, Shazam was a telephone service. You then had to send a text message to activate the microphone and then receive a response, again via text message. The app became available for the iPhone in 2008 when Apple launched its App Store for iOS. Three years later, 1 billion titles have already been analyzed
Apple bought the app in 2018 as a way to use that user base to promote its Apple Music streaming offering right inside the app. In addition, the company once again takes the opportunity to publish a reading list of the 100 most frequently identified titles on its services. The technology behind Shazam was then deployed across Apple’s various platforms as part of Control Center or Siri on iPhone, Mac or Apple Watch.
